5 Inspiring Books You Need to Read

With longer, sunnier days and a more flexible schedule, I find summer the season to rejuvenate, while also getting to pursue all my passion projects. This summer, I have been keeping myself busy as I work on growing my videography business.

However, I always need to take a break to step away from filming and/or editing so I can refresh. My favourite thing to do in my free time or after a long day of working is to pick up a good book and read. I absolutely love reading books that encourage inspiration, motivation and self-development. When I am in need of a pick-me-up, some life advice, how to improve my daily hustle and/or how to be a better person, these are the books I go to.

I am sharing 5 of my favourite books from my collection, so if you ever need a recommendation for a new book to read, be sure to check out any of these!

1) Big Magic

by Elizabeth Gilbert

Easy to follow and read, this book is full of inspiration. When I first started reading, I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it, but I couldn't find myself putting the book down! Elizabeth Gilbert, who wrote the famous "Eat Pray Love" novel, shares her insights on how you should approach your creative life, whether you are hoping to turn your passion into your work, or simply just want to incorporate creativity into your daily life. There may be things you may or may not agree with, but overall it allows you to think from a different perspective. Packed with positivity, inspiring stories, and a lot of thought-provoking ideologies, I definitely recommend this book to anyone that wants to pursue a creative lifestyle.

2) The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

by Mark Manson

Hands down, one of my favourite books of all time. I absolutely love Manson's point of view and how simply changing the way you see life can impact your overall lifestyle. It goes against the idea of "try to stay positive" and shows a realistic, more valuable perspective on how to deal with situations or pursue a healthier lifestyle. It is based on the idea that always trying to stay positive in fact is leading a negative lifestyle, and once you read into what Manson has to say, it'd be hard to disagree. I encourage anyone to pick up this book, no matter how you are doing in your life. Mark Manson, in my eyes, is incredible. His book is carefree, full of experiences, real and honest.

3) How to be a Bawse

by Lilly Singh

Lilly Singh, aka Superwoman, is one of my biggest inspirations. I've watched her grow for the past 8-9 years. She got me through middle school, high school and now university. Seeing her hustle and hard work inspires me daily. If she can do it, so can I. And so can you. Her book is full of motivation and inspiration on how to be a Bawse aka someone who takes action to make their life better each day through working hard and chasing their dreams. Her book offers so much on how you can achieve any goals you make if you work hard for it. Definitely recommend this book, whether you watch her Youtube videos or not.

4) 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life

by Humble the Poet

I have been following Humble on Instagram for many years now. His posts are always so intellectual, inspiring and thought-provoking. I decided to get his book so that I can read a little more about his ideas on how you should approach life. This book is super easy to read, with small chapters and easy to follow pages, and there is no specific order to reading this. You can pick it up anytime you need a little inspiration and start reading it from any page. Highly recommend for anyone that feels like they don't have a lot of time on their hands to read, as this is the easiest book to read during those spare few minutes.

5) 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos

by Jordan B. Peterson

I saw one of my classmates reading this book and asked if I could look at it, because it looked super interesting. I skimmed the pages and knew I had to get it. Jordan B. Peterson, a worldwide-known professor at University of Toronto, is known for his lectures on philosophy and psychology. Each chapter is focused on a rule for life and features essays, experiences, and stories covering ethics, literature, myths and much more. I haven't finished reading this book, but from all the reviews, this book is definitely highly recommended for a person of any background with any life experience.

Well there you go folks. Those are the 5 books I definitely recommend checking out if you are ever in need of inspiration or simply want to pick up a new hobby.

Reading books is my favourite way to wind down from a long day, or start a new day with a better outlook, and fresh inspiration. I believe you become what you surround yourself with. While this idea definitely applies to human connection: surrounding yourself by like-minded people, I believe the books you read, the videos you watch and the podcasts you listen to also influence your mindset and lifestyle. Keeping yourself refreshed and inspired is key to living a better life, whether you are working towards your dream job or needing motivation to balance life and work. In my busy life, making time to read a few chapters of a book has definitely improved my mental health, how I approach work and life and my overall work ethic.
